Australia and New Zealand are closing their borders to foreign visitors, the leaders of the two closely-allied countries said Thursday, escalating measures to slow the spread of coronavirus.
The radical new restrictions will be in place within hours and will exclude all but citizens and permanent residents and their foreign dependents from entering the two countries.
Both Australia and New Zealand have relatively low numbers of coronavirus cases, but want to slow the spread to avoid their health systems becoming overwhelmed.
